Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Forces Claim Multiple Deaths in Recent Border Fighting

Islamabad Armed Forces and Afghan Government Blame Each Other of Starting Attacks in the Afghan Border District of the Spin Boldak Area

New hostilities erupted along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border early on Wednesday morning, with both parties blaming the other of starting deadly confrontations.

The Pakistani military stated that its forces had eliminated "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and injured many in the Spin Boldak district frontier area.

A Afghan authorities representative said that 12 non-combatants had been killed and more than 100 injured by artillery from Pakistan. He further stated that numerous Pakistani soldiers had been killed. Not one of the reported fatalities could be verified by third parties.

Violence between the neighbouring countries has escalated since blasts shook Afghanistan recently, which Kabul blamed on Pakistan. The Afghan leadership reject allegations that it is harboring armed groups aiming at Pakistan.

Online Platforms and Armed Confrontations

The opposing forces are not only fighting for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on digital platforms, trying to convince the public that their faction is inflicting greater losses.

The latest clashes follow intense cross-border confrontations over the past few days, when the Afghan forces claimed to have eliminated fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan said it neutralized two hundred "Taliban and affiliated insurgents". The claimed death tolls provided by each side could not be independently verified.

Several days of unstable calm that had lasted since the weekend were broken on Wednesday morning.

On-the-Ground Reports and Impact

Videos purportedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been circulated online and on social channels, including images said to be of those deceased and blurry shots from low-light cameras claiming to be of check posts demolished. These videos have not been verified.

A source in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan reported that fighting broke out at around 04:00 local time (23:30 GMT on Tuesday). Another local in the district, who lives about one kilometre away from the frontier post, reported that "intense clashes persisted for almost five hours".

"We observed unmanned aircraft and fighter planes flying over us, a number of our relatives are wounded," they said.

A medical professional in one of the medical facilities in the region reported that he counted "7 bodies and thirty-six injured brought to the medical center", including men, females and children.

The situation were "tense" and additional victims were being taken to hospital, he said.

Displacement and International Responses

A regional authority figure in the area announced that "numerous of families have been displaced since the previous evening due to the intense clashes". He mentioned they were on "maximum readiness" after a several Taliban posts were targeted by aircraft from Pakistan. He added that they had the remains of two armed forces members.

In a separate overnight engagement on the western border, the Islamabad's forces said that 25 to 30 Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "suspected" to have been killed.

The hostilities have led to appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including Beijing and Russia, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to broker a ceasefire.

On Wednesday, Richard Bennett, United Nations representative on the situation of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by reports of civilian casualties and displacement because of the clashes.

"I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians, and follow international law," he wrote.

Long-Standing Tensions

Pakistan has long alleged the Taliban authorities of allowing the Pakistani militants to function from their land and battle against the Islamabad government in an attempt to impose a rigid religion-based system of rule.

The Taliban leadership has always rejected these allegations.
