Going California Sober: Research Indicates Cannabis May Assist in Reducing Drinking Consumption

Emerging scientific investigation published in the prestigious psychiatry journal proposes that adopting a “California sober” method might significantly help individuals reduce their alcohol use.

The Study and Controlled Environment Scenario

Researchers from Brown University carried out a unique experiment where volunteers received cannabis cigarettes to consume before entering a specially designed “bar lab”.

  • Participants could choose to consume up to 8 mini alcoholic beverages.
  • The experiment was repeated on three occasions with varying THC potencies: 7.2%, moderate potency, and a 0.03% cannabis.

Great care was taken to replicate a real-life bar atmosphere, complete with dim lighting and drinks on tap to guarantee subject realism.

“Our goal was to ensure that when given the opportunity, you would be highly motivated to drink,” stated the principal investigator.

Significant Results and Impact on Drinking

Outcomes showed a notable decrease in drink consumption after participants used marijuana:

  • Drink intake fell by 19% after consuming 3.1% THC marijuana.
  • Reduction was more pronounced with 7.2% THC marijuana, leading to a twenty-seven percent reduction compared to the control.

Broader Context and Additional Studies

Expanded legalization has spurred a major surge in cannabis usage, which has increased twofold over the last ten years.

At the same time, alcohol consumption is at a historic low, with many opting for alternatives like marijuana.

It is important to note that forty percent of study subjects were diagnosed with alcohol dependence.

While cannabis might be a possible alternative to excessive alcohol use, researchers warn that further study is needed.

“It is premature to tell individuals in treatment for drinking problems, ‘Go ahead and substitute marijuana, and it will work out for you,’” a study author commented.
