Significant Online Failure Affects Dozens Sites and Mobile Apps
A widespread web failure has affected numerous websites and applications globally, and users experiencing issues connecting to the web following issues at the online infrastructure platform.
The affected platforms comprise the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-operated operations such as its key e-commerce website and the Ring security device manufacturer.
Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was disrupted along with its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, with further notifications of problems using the HMRC website on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring users used social media to state their doorbells were failing.
Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of issues on specific apps reached the tens of thousands for each platform.
Officials confirmed that the problem began in the eastern region of the United States at AWS, a section that offers crucial online infrastructure for many businesses, who lease resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive web hosting service.
Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the America (8am BST), Amazon confirmed “increased problem frequencies and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the United States. The cascading impact was seen to hit platforms around the world, with the Downdetector site showing issues with the same sites in various regions.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, additionally noted a rise in issues on that morning, including several cases situated in Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the outage began.
